Or a give away. The blog injuries have been healed, and although I’m still crazy busy, I need to write. And if I’m going to write, why shouldn’t I inflict it on the world? No reason at all, that’s why!
Anyway, to get the ball rolling and hopefully entice old readers back and maybe a few new readers to boot, I’m starting off with a review and a give away.
*Disclaimer. I know and like the author of this book. She’s a friend, and if I could kidnap her and make her come live in Texas, I would. I did attempt to give as honest review as possible, but it’s possible that my love for Amelia has colored my judgment. However, is it surprising that a wonderful person wrote a wonderful book? No, it is not.
One Nation Under God: A Book for Little Patriots by Amelia Hamilton is a must have for every young child’s library. With sweet illustrations and well-written verse, Amelia covers the “bones” of our nation’s history and government (from the presidents on Mt. Rushmore, to our first naval vessels and the pipes and drums of the Revolutionary War.) .
Although marketed as a counting book, it’s only a counting book in the loosest sense of the term. The numbers are a vehicle for the history, not the other way around. (For reference, I’m thinking of Richard Scarry’s Best Counting Book Ever as a traditional counting book. It’s also interminable. By 60 I’m ready to turn the kid’s parent’s in for letting him roam unsupervised just to stop the dang counting!)
The illustrations have a sweet, classic feel, but they’re fun, too. For example, the four presidents of Mt. Rushmore are all looking up at the “thought bubbles” illustrating their presidencies, and the Supreme Court Chief Justice tug-of-war is perfection.

I love having the girls read this book to the boys, because though it’s aimed at younger kids, the girls get a great refresher on the basics of American History and Government. In fact, adults might just learn a few things they didn’t know. I know I did.

I would love to win the book for my kids. Thanks
The best part is that you’re back to blogging! yaaaaaay. I’m glad all the techno-whats-its were worked out.
In other stories, I would love to win a copy of Amelia’s book. The 3.5 year old nephew could definitely use a gift from his rockin’ aunt. 😉
I would love to have this book for Emily.
Would love to have one for the grandsons. Glad you are blogging again.
Killer history for kids and for free? There is nothing better. Oh, wait. Yes there is. You’re sponsoring it and Amelia wrote it.
This would be a great addition to the homeschool curriculum I use for my kids.
Okay, here’s the comment in which I note that I tweeted about your return to blogging, quite happily, might I add. See the evidence! –> https://twitter.com/#!/MbernadetteE/status/196289322700382208
(Seriously though. I like when it’s an oddly blogged kind of day.)
I would like to be able to read this to my kids.

I’d love to have it! Tweeted.

Looks like a fine addition to any family library. I’ll probably grab a copy or 3 for some nephews & great-nephews.
