charachter quote

Tonight our homeschool group is having the end of year banquet where each child is awarded a character certificate by their parents. This is the first year we’ve done this, so I was sure what to do. Most families focus on a spiritual virtue in which their child has grown.

Talking with MTG, it didn’t take us long to identify areas of growth in our kids. It just seemed obvious: yes, this child has grown here, overcome in this area, and become strong in this virtue. I wonder if my character growth would be so obvious to others

In fact, I’ve started to think how I’ve grown over the past year. Nothing obvious comes to mind just yet, but I’ll choose to believe that’s because I haven’t given it enough thought, not that there isn’t any growth to think of. (Yeah, that’s the ticket!) Actually, I know where I hope I’ve grown, I’m just not sure I actually have.

I also thought of the best quote about virtues:  “Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” (C.S. Lewis, naturally.)

Here’s to being a courageous character! Maybe next year I’ll be able to award myself a certificate.
