There’s a Backwards Works for Me Wednesday, and boy do I need it. Our schedule is go, go, go all the time and we are having a devil of a time getting things done. We leave the house by 10 or 10:30 Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Friday we’re gone by 8:30 for co-op. Whatever we don’t get done before we leave, in the car or at our appointments, tends to not get done in the afternoons. How do you handle homeschooling on the go? My girls are 8 and 6 and need more mom help than an older child. Whaddya got for me?

On your 10-10:30 days, are those mandatory or are they appointments you could move to the afternoon? Can you get your kids up and started with school by 8:00? You could introduce concepts and give examples before leaving the house, then have the kids take along what is not completed to finish while you are on the go.
I don’t really have a suggestion. I am going to homeschool, but my kids are still young, so I have no experience on which to draw. I just had to comment because I happened on your blog from WFMW and I am going to keep visiting in the future. I am a Christian woman who is interested in conservative politics (I supported Ron Paul for this election), and your title alone (Question the Culture) speaks to some things I’ve been thinking about and learning lately. Feel free to check out my blog too (I just wrote about Sarah Palin today, so I laughed when I saw that you had blogged about her a few days ago.) PS–my comments aren’t working, but you can email me at kerith8@gmail.com.
I am a homeschooling mom of three boys, ages 7, 5 and 2. We are ALWAYS on the go and a lot of our homeschooling “discussions” happen in the car. We play spend time playing word games, rhyming, spelling, etc. We do a lot of our schooling at museums and parks.. but I don’t have a lot of appointments that I have to be to (besides story time at the library.) Good luck and take advantage of all the time in the car!
(Been homelearning for 15 years, currently teaching 4)Like Janet said, car time is a good time for games, discussions on broad concepts (history and science, for instance). Spelling, math facts can be practiced, easily, too. You might want to consider travel bins or bags. Each of our kids have a bin with easy daily work in it that can be taken in the car to be worked on ~ like language arts workbooks, etc.
I like what the others have said. I’d add that audio books are also great in the car. Also, I’ve found that keeping all schoolwork in backpacks at all times is handy for grabbing and going and for keeping things neat and tidy at home too. And in backpacks you’ve got places for pencils, crayons, etc. and they don’t fall out!

My friends who successfully homeschool and are organized, etc.
They stay home and schooling is a priority.
Do the 6 and 8 yr olds have to be driving in the car so much? Can something be let go? Or do you like that?
They suggestions above are great if you have to drive every day.
Less is more may help.
Bless you.
It sounds to me like there is a mismatch between your curriculum and your lifestyle. Can you find some more eclectic, or “unschooling” resources?
Living books – books with plots and stories about science or history, etc. can be read or listened to in the car.
That said, we do some of out HS in the evening. Dad reads aloud from a book (we are studying Pioneers, so reading The Orphan Train, Joshua’s Westword Journey, etc.) Afternoons at our house don’t work well for HSing at our house.
Tweak your schedule so that it works for you! Instead of half an hour for math every day, try 45 minutes every other day. Instead of spelling in a 45 minute block, work on one or two words in 5 minute increments throughout the day (think flashcards or spelling bee style).
HTH!
Thanks for all the suggestion. Hopefully we can make the right adjustments for our family.
I’m not a homeschooler, but I’ve come across a book about “Carschooling” a few times in my travels – maybe it’d be of some help.

I was also going to suggest audio books! You could have a traveling book club – listen to a chapter and then discuss the main ideas, etc. That sounds like it could be fun!
Good luck!
