First things first: Did you have a happy Thanksgiving? We had a very nice holiday with my family at my brother’s house in Houston. The kids are all far too big and my niece is a college freshman and technically an adult. That’s disturbing. Oh yes, and my nephew towers over us all. Very disturbing. But it was very good. Good food, good conversation. It was a very blessed day and I am truly thankful.
Today, MTG and I took the kids to The Muppets with my sister-in-law, three of those kids (not the towering teen) and my grandmother. I am a huge fan of The Muppets and I’ve done my best to pass on my love to my kids. We watch the various Muppet movies, but frankly they prefer The Muppet Show. We listen to the music. We are Muppet fans. So, even though the reviews have been amazing, it was with a bit of trepidation that I went to see the new movie.
I have become accustomed to Hollywood ripping off my childhood with remakes, sequels and prequels. Some are fine, many merely mediocre movies, and several are cinematic disasters. However, when they are compared to rose colored childhood memories, even good movies tend to suffer. Of course, some are just atrocities wrapped in failures inside debacles. (I’m looking at you, Star Wars Episodes I-III.)
With that in mind, I was both excited and apprehensive to see The Muppets. It was wonderful, a beautiful blend of old and new. The new movie is very much in keeping with the spirit of the two best Muppet movies (IMO) The Muppet Movie and Muppets Take Manhattan, which in turn were in the spirit of The Muppet Show. As much as I enjoy the literary adaptions like The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island, the Muppets as hapless group of performing weirdos is what makes them both lovable and great.

The Muppets is quintessential Muppets, right down to the deux ex machina. Jason Segel and Amy Adams are the (very talented) human co-stars and did a wonderful job as supporting actors. (Dogs and children have nothing on Muppets, all humans play second fiddle to Muppets.) There’s a nice mix of classic songs and new numbers, a sweet and utterly improbably plot line. The Muppets is a perfect homage to the past and a beautiful introduction to a new generation of Muppet fans.
