Journey into a strange new land

Warning: this post deals with poop and vomit.

We think the Bulldozer has food sensitivities, definitely to milk, perhaps also to gluten. So we are doing a two-week gluten free, casein free (GFCF) diet for the little guy, just in time for his birthday. Woo-hoo.

When I first weaned him (at about 13 months) he was lactose intolerant, but he seemed to grow out of it. He would still get sick if his milk were even slightly sour, but, for the most part, he seemed okay.

The latest digest issues just started last week, and I thought he had a virus at first. Then I suspected milk, so we switched to a lactose-free milk and cut out other dairy. But even after that, every night for a week he’d throw up and have explosive diarrhea between 11 and 12 at night. No other time, no other symptoms. (Side note: his poop was the most foul smelling poop I have ever smelled. Really, I can’t believe the Gigglemeister slept through the stench of it.) So we’re trying this diet and will see what else his doctor says.

The first day yielded good results, no digestive issues (read vomiting and diarrhea) PLUS he slept ’til seven this morning. His normal wake-up time has been before 5:30. I say before 5:30 because my brain doesn’t register numbers on the clock prior to that time. I see the “5” and the rest is a blur.

It is a challenge to find things to feed the little guy. I’m making some GFCF bread for sandwiches and I made this chocolate cake for his birthday. Also, did you know most margarine contains milk? It’s rather frustrating. On the positive side, I won’t be tempted to stop by for fast food, because the poor little pooper can’t have anything. That’ll save us some cash that we can spend on expensive GFCF food.

In a couple of weeks, we’ll try adding back the gluten. I really hope he isn’t sensitive to gluten, cuz this “bread” dough smells weird and doesn’t look so hot.

    Hey April!

You might want to check out the foodlab yahoogroup, here:

There are a whole lot of us who’ve BTDT, and have all kinds of good answers to the question of “and so *now* what do we eat?”
