On the road again

Heading East into the sun. Just call me Squinty.

Necessary requirements for a road trip: snacks, drinks, baby wipes (Always baby wipes. Trust me.) and good driving music.

Honestly, these days I don’t listen to a lot of music when traveling. We usually listen to audiobooks or maybe a RadioLab or the like. Right now, we’re actually listening to Kidnapped by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Does that read as lame as it was to type? Got my pocket protector fastened to my seatbelt.

Anyway, today’s post is for your traveling musical needs, including collections from friends on Twitter and Facebook, since I’m obviously not a good source of road music anymore. My own tastes run to Phil Keaggy (True Believers and Sundays Child are great for driving) to They Might Be Giants. We’ve also been known to listen to folk songs because we embrace our nerdiness with both arms and then dance a jig.

For less…educational music choices, my friends had some fun suggestions:

Matt Newman at Old Line Elephant likes “Open Road Song” by Eve 6.

Jerry Wilson at Goldfish and Clowns suggests “Radar Love” by Golden Earring.

My friend Brittany likes “American Girl” by Tom Petty and “To Be With You” by Mr. Big, and Natalie prefers Norah Jones and Jon Mayer for driving through autumn leaves and Blues Travelers for general driving.

Andrew Lawton of The Landmark Report lists “Brothers in Arms” by Dire Straits, “New York Minute,” and gives another vote for “Radar Love.”

Jeff likes “With a wonder” by Rich Mullins (awe. I miss him!)

Ana likes Extended Dance Remix by New Order. Well okay then.

Carol suggests Glenn Miller Orchestra, and I can thoroughly endorse that.

Cynthia gave me the only earworm of the list with John Denver’s Country Roads.

And Nick brings Eddie Rabbitt “Driving My Life Away” and the title post “On The Road Again” from Willie Nelson, my birthday buddy!

And if this isn’t enough, I solicited opinion from Brandon Morse of Misfit Politics because he’s always traveling and he likes his tunes, and he pointed me to the Friday Five from a couple of weeks ago. Lots of good stuff there.

What about you? What’s your favorite road music?
